As I get older, I’ve come to realize that the price of being drunk on love is far higher than gambling.
With gambling, at least you know your limits. You bring only the money you are willing to lose. If you lose, the worst that happens is your money is gone. Tomorrow, you can still earn it back.
But love... you never know when you actually start placing your bet. There is no receipt, no contract, yet the potential loss has no limit.
At first, you find yourself smiling for no reason. Your phone rings once and your heart beats like you have just won the lottery. Someone simply mentions their name and suddenly the whole day feels beautiful, like you are living in Disneyland. Other people might think you have just received a big bonus. The truth is, you only received a message saying, “Have you eaten yet?”
The problem is, when love does not work out, what disappears is not only time, money, or dignity. Sometimes even your self confidence disappears too. Some people become quiet, some become poets, and some turn into “stone”, hard on the outside but broken inside. Everything falls apart.
And some end up leaving their hometown, carrying themselves far away...
The funniest thing is, you know it might never work out. Your friends have already shown signs of disapproval. Your mind has already raised the white flag. But your heart still refuses to give up.
That is love.
Perhaps that is why people say those who are in love are not stupid, they have simply stopped using their common sense for a while.
